Tom Mackin (59), died in his home on February 13th, 2012,  having lived for six years after his diagnosis with a rare pancreatic tumor.

He was born and raised in Beaumont Texas and retained his Lone Star charm throughout his life. He received a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Houston in 1978. In 1980  he moved to Seattle to join his sweetheart, Ruth. They were married in 1982.

Tom was a devoted, active father to two daughters, Julie and Laura who will always know the meaning of unconditional love. Doing anything with them was one of his greatest pleasures.

Tom worked as a psychotherapist for 25 years. He worked at Group Health and later in private practice in Bellevue for most of his career. He served his clients with dedication, warmth and humor and felt honored to spend his life doing what he loved.

Tom was a compact, tough linebacker and quarterback in high school, an avid marathon runner as a young adult, and in later years a tennis player, bocce ball player and golfer. He played all sports with great intensity, not always appreciated by his opponents.  He was an avid reader and in recent years loved to read books about individuals who persevered despite facing incredible odds.

Tom was truly one of a kind.  Disarmingly direct, honest and plainspoken. He lived in the moment with quiet recognition of its importance and preciousness. He led his life with grace, courage, compassion and integrity and left an imprint on our hearts and souls.

He is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his three sisters and three brothers.

A public celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Center for Urban Horticulture, (3501 NE 41st St, Seattle) near the University of Washington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rick Pankow Foundation, (18654 NW Bernina CT, Issaquah,WA) an organization providing assistance to patients and families of those affected by cancer.
